The Clubhouse Model

What is a Clubhouse?

A Clubhouse is a community-based service dedicated to supporting and empowering people living with mental illness, known as Clubhouse members.

Based on the Clubhouse Model of psychosocial rehabilitation, each Clubhouse offers a collaborative, restorative environment where Clubhouse members can recover by gaining access to opportunities for employment, socialisation, education, skill development, housing and improved wellness.

Organised around the belief that every individual has something valuable to contribute to society, Clubhouses effectively help people build self-confidence and end the social and economic isolation so often associated with mental illness.

A Global Movement

The first Clubhouse, Fountain House, was founded in New York in 1948 by people leaving psychiatric hospital who wanted to support one another in rebuilding their lives. What began as a small community has grown into an international movement. Today, there are over 370 Clubhouses in more than 30 countries, supporting thousands of people worldwide.

Each Clubhouse follows shared international standards and can achieve accreditation through Clubhouse International, a quality assurance process that ensures programmes operate safely, effectively and in line with the model’s core principles.

Why Mosaic follows the Clubhouse Model

We follow the Clubhouse Model because it creates lasting recovery through community, structure and opportunity.

Mental illness often brings isolation, loss of purpose and disconnection from community. The Clubhouse Model directly addresses this by creating a place where people are needed, valued and able to contribute.

At Mosaic, members are not passive recipients of support; they are active participants in a working community. This approach builds confidence, reduces isolation and helps people develop the skills and stability needed to move forward.

The Clubhouse Model shapes everything we do at Mosaic. We follow the 37 Clubhouse standards which act as a ‘bill of rights’ for members and a code of ethics for staff.

Mosaic Clubhouse is also a colleague training base and offers best practice for the global Clubhouse community. It has been awarded the highest level of Clubhouse International accreditation and is recognised as a centre of excellence, both within London and internationally.
